# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Snoll Hatch: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Snoll Hatch, finding it before the engine runs usually means draining and a full flush on the spot.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Snoll Hatch and Little Mill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Snoll Hatch?

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Addlestead Road, or at Man of Kent on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it happens in Addlestead or the middle of Snoll Hatch, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Branbridges or a forecourt in Snoll Hatch.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it next to the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Beltring? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere in Kent the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Snoll Hatch Road on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.

- Both under a single flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Snoll Hatch?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Shell or another — the staff will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Snoll Hatch.

When the engine has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

On the M26, under 10 miles from Snoll Hatch, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Southend-on-Sea, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Snoll Hatch.

## Snoll Hatch: what takes place when our engineers arrive

Outside East Peckham Primary School, close to East Peckham Library or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Those answers decide this work and the quote, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither clears away by itself. That is why it matters more.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after we are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

The car remains where it is.

Anywhere it sits — beside Holy Trinity, on a lay-by en route to Wave Park, on a drive — that's where it gets emptied.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Hop Farm Family Park? Close to a county line? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.
