# Sough: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine has not turned, it's emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle sits around Sough.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven around Sough and Blacksnape carry another fluid as well.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Sough: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Thompson Street before work, or in the car park outside The Spinners on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and once the tip starts, no part stops it.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Spring Vale or right in the centre of Sough.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Darwen or a forecourt around Sough.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — at Darwen's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in Lancashire, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Bentley Street.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Sough?

Do not start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Texaco or another — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle away, when you ask.

Your own driveway in Sough is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next junction is where to leave if you are on the M65, under 3 miles from Sough.

About how far did it go? Crossing Sough is less work than a run of under 15 miles towards Preston, and so tell us.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive in Sough

Wherever your car has stopped, whether outside Darwen, St Barnabas CofE Primary Academy, beside St Barnabas or at home, the van travels to it.

Those answers decide the work and our price, so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

No one heads out until you have had our price by phone.

Then that tank is drained and the system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains around Sough, and Lancashire beyond

Over BB postcodes, the teams that cover Sough — a residential suburb — work the surrounding spots too, Radford and Whitehall included.

Quickest of all: quote a BB3 2 postcode to the van.

The car remains put.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to St Peter's, a lay-by on the way to Whitehall Park, a drive.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of South African War Memorial.

## In short, for Sough drivers

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
