# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in South Ascot: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where the vehicle sits around South Ascot, is usually what it needs if found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round South Ascot and North Ascot carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in South Ascot?

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

On a driveway off Spring Gardens before work, or in the car park outside The Swinley heading home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the pour begins, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of South Ascot or out in Ascot.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in The Rise or a forecourt in South Ascot.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many cars mark which belongs in each inlet right there.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a hire car or company car — from Ascot's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever around Berkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Brockenhurst Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check once more — making sure your diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in South Ascot?

Don't start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Esso, Murco or any forecourt will usually help to push the car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around South Ascot.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

South Ascot lies under 5 miles from the M3; there, use the first junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing South Ascot is smaller a job than a trip of under 25 miles towards Westminster, so say.

## When our technicians get there in South Ascot, what takes place?

Outside South Ascot Village Primary School, near All Souls or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

No one sets off until you have had the quote by phone.

Then your tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

The engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
