# South Down: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle is around South Down.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels near South Down and Otterbourne run, with diesel feeding the engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

There is a filler for each tank.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in South Down: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Tilden Road before work, or in the car park at The Bridge Inn heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a strange car.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Compton or the heart of South Down: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Twyford or a forecourt in South Down, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Shawford.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever you are around Hampshire — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of M3, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel filler remained closed throughout. Only then, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## South Down: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Sainsbury's or the Murco, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

At home in South Down? So your car stays where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction is where to come off if you're on the M3, under a mile from South Down.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Winchester, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across South Down.

## What happens when we turn up in South Down

Outside Compton All Saints Church of England Primary School, close to All Saints or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

What liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide the work and price.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it counts more.

After the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers start the engine and confirm that it is running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour once we are there.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains round South Down, and Hampshire beyond

South Down is a village, and the teams that cover it also work the places near it, Shawford and Compton End among them, across the SO postcode area.

Quickest of all: give a SO21 2 postcode to the van.

No need to shift the vehicle.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Shawford Down, a side street close to Twyford Community Centre: we drain it where it is.

Guessing won't help at the back of Compton Place, on a boundary, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

## South Down motorists: the short version
