# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in South Ham: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in South Ham.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of newer diesels seen about South Ham and Viables hold another fluid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around South Ham: how it happens

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off St Patrick's Road before work, or in the car park outside The Beacon on the way home.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it occurs in Kings Furlong or the middle of South Ham, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a South Ham forecourt or a driveway over in Winklebury, spend a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Basingstoke.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pinkerton Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel filler remained shut throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in South Ham already?

Short order, then. First: your engine stays off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Texaco, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway in South Ham, leave it where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M3, under 3 miles from South Ham, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across South Ham is less work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Winchester, so say.

## Our arrival around South Ham, and what happens next

Outside St Anne's Catholic Primary School, close to St Andrew's Methodist Church or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because those answers determine this work and our price.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then your tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. Hence it matters more.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## About South Ham itself

South Ham is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated inland at an elevation of 104 metres, approximately 15.9 miles from Winchester and 45.9 miles from London. South Ham is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and is located near other residential areas such as Kings Furlong and West Ham. South Ham has a population of around 6064 residents, making it a moderately sized community within the region.

## South Ham and Hampshire: AdBlue drains across the area

South Ham is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the towns near it, West Ham and Buckskin among them, across the RG postcode area.

A postcode starting RG22 6 gets the van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to move.

Anywhere it stands — beside Saint Peter's Church, on a layby en route to Kings Road Open Space, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of South Ham Library.

## In short, for South Ham motorists

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Hampshire.
