# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in South View: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around South View.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Daneshill, like those in South View, run on two liquids; the engine gets only your diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around South View

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Norn Hill, or outside The Queens Arms on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar cars come next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of South View or out in Basingstoke.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Black Dam or a forecourt around South View, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- The handbook shows which it lives when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Basingstoke.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Doswell Way on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five is out.

## South View: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Morrisons or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in South View.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then switch off.

South View lies under a mile from the M3; there, use the next exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across South View is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles to Winchester — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when we get there in South View

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside South View Junior School, close to L'Arc or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, because the answers decide the work and our quote.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains across Hampshire, South View included

As a residential suburb, South View shares its vans surrounding areas — Eastrop, Oakridge — right across RG postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Give a postcode beginning RG21 4, and our van gets there fastest.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Saint Mary's Church, a lay-by on the way to Lyford Road Recreation Ground, a driveway.

Awkward to explain, like the back of St Mary's Church Centre? By a county line? Checking is better than assuming, so ring.

## South View drivers: the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Hampshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave it off and call 0333 366 0103.
