# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in South Wraxall: Why It Happens

Keep your engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

In South Wraxall, catching it before the motor runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels around Blue Vein, as well as South Wraxall, carry on two liquids; your motor gets only your diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## South Wraxall: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off B3109 before work, or in the car park outside The Longs Arms on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a new motor.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

Whether it happens in Lower Wraxall or the middle of South Wraxall, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around South Wraxall or a driveway over in Farleigh Wick. A few seconds, no more.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Bradford-On-Avon, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across Wiltshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Ivy Lane.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## South Wraxall: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor stays off.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Murco or any other — the attendants will normally help push your car clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own drive around South Wraxall, leave the car where it sits.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

South Wraxall lies under 10 miles from the M4; there, take the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across South Wraxall is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles to Bath, so tell us.

## What takes place when our engineers turn up in South Wraxall

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Churchfields, the Village School, near St. James or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
