# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Southborough? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your motor off then keep your ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing happens till your engine pulls it through.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully cleaned where the car sits around Southborough.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Southborough, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BR2 8, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way along The Fairway.

- Emptying that tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Southborough forecourt you're on, the Harvest Energy or any other.

If you're on your own drive, leave it just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It does not combine. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Widmore last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

After it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; meanwhile, since it attacks some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight around Southborough makes it worse. In the tank only, time costs nothing.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have an issue of thin fuel.

No harm comes as long as it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only once the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so thinning it can't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other mistake — in Locksbottom or the heart of Southborough equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in Greater London your car has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Southborough: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

A container picked up while heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Southborough Primary School the refill is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Holmcroft Way.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside The Chequers.

Rented motors, brand-new motors, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it most.

Wherever you are in Southborough or the rest of Greater London, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Southborough: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it has gone.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Bromley Golf Centre or halfway across Southborough.

When safe, pull over then switch everything off — with no restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M25, under 5 miles from Southborough, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Southborough to the car park by St Augustine's Church is a very different job from a run towards London, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the motor has been running.

Long-term damage is very rare when it's spotted soon.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Southborough: what it takes

The car remains put, whether that is a road beside Holmcroft Church, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Southborough, and our van comes to it.

Three answers shape the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid went in, about what quantity, and if your engine has turned over.

Next, draining that tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together.

A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't clear away on its own.

Next, your filter: flushed, or changed if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a check of the car.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers turn up, provided your engine has not run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, at Bickley or on a driveway in Southborough.

Our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel before we go.

No garage is needed at any point, with the entire job done on the spot.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## Southborough and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the BR postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Southborough serve most of Greater London as well, Bromley Common, Bickley and Petts Wood included.

Ring and check rather than guess if you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

Wherever your vehicle stands — your driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — our technicians empty it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Southborough, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Southborough: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so not one single price is honest.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Southborough Library.

That's why every call from Southborough starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those replies narrow the range right down to a single figure.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, dig out your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Southborough: still alongside the vehicle?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to leave it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus if the engine ran is all our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Greater London, Southborough included.
