# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Southborough? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

The trouble starts once it is sucked through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the car stands in Southborough.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Southborough

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, so don't bin it away.

- Give us a postcode starting KT6 6, or whichever street is nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Never:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Even a short way up Ditton Road is too far to drive it.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

The staff on duty at any Southborough filling station — the Shell included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

On that drive, the vehicle remains just where it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

No part in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to travel that way.

It doesn't combine. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Surbiton last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car parked around Southborough. Just in your tank, it stays stable.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the JET.

Mixed into the diesel and left unused, it's no threat at that stage; running the motor is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Whether the vehicle sits in Giggshill or the heart of Southborough, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater London the vehicle is standing.

## Southborough: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

Usually it's never the filling station: a driver buys a container heading home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

Hurrying, outside Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Ditton Hill.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Maypole, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented vehicles, new vehicles, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least known vehicles see it the most.

Keep it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere around Southborough or the remainder of Greater London you happen to be.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Southborough?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

The filter and lines have had it pulled along, and some running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Hook Leisure Gardens, say, or midway across Southborough.

No starting it again to test: stop once safe, then switch it off.

Every start pulls more of it through.

Southborough sits under 5 miles from the M25; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Southborough to the car park by Hook Evangelical Church is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has ended up, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it's spotted soon.

## Southborough: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Southborough: a side street near St Mary's Church, Long Ditton, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what went in, roughly how much, and if your engine has been run, because those answers settle this work.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the system with new diesel comes at the end.

Starting it comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, at Surbiton or on a drive in Southborough.

It is checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave.

No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## Southborough: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Enid Blyton.

With that in mind, every call from Southborough opens with the same trio — what went in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Those answers shrink a range right down to a single number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our price on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
