# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Southbourne: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the car stands around Southbourne, is usually what it takes when caught before your motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Southbourne and West Southbourne carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the fumes.

There is a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every filling station visit, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Southbourne

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Douglas Road before work, or in the car park outside The Athelstan on the way home.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Tuckton or the middle of Southbourne: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Southbourne forecourt or a drive over in Iford, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — at Christchurch's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across Dorset, use this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Foxholes Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Both under a single flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side stays shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Southbourne already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it alone runs the pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Southbourne, leave the car where it sits.

Where your engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch it off.

The next junction means the place to come off when you are on the M27, under 25 miles from Southbourne.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Southampton, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Southbourne.

## Our arrival around Southbourne, and what occurs next

By St Katharine's Church of England Primary School, close to Our Lady Queen of Peace & Blessed Margaret Pole or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Which fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because the replies set the work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of dispatch.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears out on its own, no matter how long it is left.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians start it and check that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we arrive, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

The vehicle does not need to move.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Seafield Gardens, a side street near Saint Katharines Church: our engineers drain the car where it stands.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Charles Rolls Memorial? By a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.
