# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Southbury: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Keep the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain and a full flush, done just where the car stands around Southbury, is normally all it needs when caught before the motor runs.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Enfield Town, as well as Southbury, carry on two liquids; your motor takes only the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on every tank.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt visit, again and again.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Southbury: how it takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Southbury Road, or heading home in the car park at The Lincoln.

Unfamiliar cars come second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, no part stops it.

Ponders End or the middle of Southbury: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Enfield or a forecourt around Southbury.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- On many vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere around Greater London the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed by Baird Road at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found your filler and read it.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel filler stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Southbury already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Keep your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Morrisons, Sainsbury's or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Southbury.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M25, under 3 miles from Southbury, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards London, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Southbury.

## What takes place when we turn up around Southbury

Outside Southbury Primary School, near Cineworld Enfield or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those answers decide the work and price.

The quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing washes away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Your car does not need to move.

Anywhere it stands — beside Anytime Fitness, on a lay-by en route to Bush Hill Park, at home — that is where it gets cleared.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Southbury Leisure Centre.
