# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Southery: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done right where your car stands in Southery, is usually all it needs if found before your motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds the motor — yet many newer diesels driven round Southery and Hilgay hold another liquid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Many of cars share a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Southery?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Upgate Street before work, or in the car park at Old White Bell heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a strange motor.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Southery or out in Little London.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Black Horse Drove or a forecourt around Southery.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Littleport? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever it is around Norfolk — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Feltwell Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Southery already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

The staff at Esso, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away if asked.

On your own drive around Southery? So your car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M11, under 25 miles from Southery, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Southery is less a job than a run of under 15 miles to Ely, and so tell us.

## When we get there in Southery, what occurs?

By Southery Academy, near Southery Village Sign or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

We ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, since those replies settle this work and our price.

No one heads out until you have had our price over the phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after we are there.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

There's no need to shift your car.

Wherever it sits — beside Saint Mary's Church, in a lay-by en route to Old Roof Wood, at home — that is where it is emptied.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Southery Village Hall, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## In short, for Southery motorists

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Norfolk, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103.
