# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Southgate? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then keep the ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully rinsed where the car sits in Southgate.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Southgate

Do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, take the keys out.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting PE31 7, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Not to do:

- No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition your car.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch up The Old Coal Yard.

- Beside the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Southgate forecourt you're on, the Lavender Hill Service Station or any other.

At your own drive, don't move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Shepherds Port overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, untouched — though it will be first through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out.

A car left standing around Southgate with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a second kind of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco Fuel.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Dersingham or the middle of Southgate.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only inside your tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, wherever your car has come to rest across Norfolk.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Southgate

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Snettisham Primary School the top-up is rushed.

Near Blossom End, a driver tips a container in on that drive in the evening.

One more version: darkness, a pub car park outside Queen Victoria, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a new vehicle, a company car, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types — the cars people know the least.

Same mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be around Southgate or the rest of Norfolk.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Southgate?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through the filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might appear, maybe midway across Southgate or coming back from Frogpits Wood.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the A1(M), under 50 miles from Southgate, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so heading towards Ely, under 50 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Southgate to the car park by Saint Mary's Church Hall.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it is caught early.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Southgate

Anywhere it has come to rest in Southgate — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside Snettisham Village Sign — the van travels to the car.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run, since those answers settle the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through since residue won't wash out unaided.

Clean diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Last, the system is bled with clean diesel.

Then our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay by Kings Lynn or a drive in Southgate.

It is tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs properly before we head off.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## About Southgate itself

Southgate is a small suburban area in Norfolk, situated near the coast and approximately 98 miles from London. Southgate has a population of around 2182 people and is characterized by predominantly detached housing. Southgate is close to nearby places such as Snettisham, Norton Hill, and Ingoldisthorpe, and is about 34 miles from the city of Ely. Southgate sits at a low elevation of around 11 metres above sea level.

## AdBlue drains across Norfolk, Southgate included

Throughout the PE postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs around Southgate reach most of Norfolk too, Snettisham, Norton Hill and Ingoldisthorpe included.

Ring and ask rather than guess when you're close to a border, or anywhere tricky to explain.

A van that comes to you suits Southgate, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring the car to us, because our technicians drain it there, in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Southgate

There's no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Snettisham.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, every call from Southgate opens with three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if the engine ran.

With those replies, a range shrinks to one firm figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Alongside your car in Southgate, still?

Then, do nothing — that's the most helpful move there is.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, across Southgate or anywhere in Norfolk, once you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if it ran.
