# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Speedwell: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Leave your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, if the motor hasn't run, it's emptied and fully purged where the vehicle sits in Speedwell.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven around Speedwell and Mayfield Park carry another fluid too.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Speedwell: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Deans Drive before work, or in the car park at The Spotted Cow on the way home.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Speedwell or out in Burchells Green.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Speedwell or a drive over in Crofts End. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Stapleton Road? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere around Bristol the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of The Ruebins.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Finish once that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently using the built-in spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Speedwell already?

Short list, then. First: the motor stays off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Texaco, Morrisons or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Speedwell.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit is where to come off if you're on the M32, under 3 miles from Speedwell.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Speedwell is a smaller job than heading under 5 miles towards Bristol — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Speedwell: what occurs when we turn up

Wherever the car has stopped, whether by Chester Park Junior School, beside Argyle Morley United Reformed Church or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because the replies settle the work and our quote.

During the call itself, you are told the quote — before dispatch.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears away on its own, no matter how long it is left.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Your engine is started next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
