# Spofforth: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Spofforth.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Spofforth and Little Ribston carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, again and again.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Spofforth

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Harrogate Road before work, or in the car park at The Castle on the way home.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour begins, no part halts it.

Whether it happens in Sicklinghall or the middle of Spofforth, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Spofforth forecourt or a driveway over in Kirk Deighton, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook says which it is when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Pannal's car park, say — rather than once the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across North Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of High Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Spofforth?

Don't start the engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Shell or somewhere else.

On your own drive around Spofforth? Then the car remains where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the A1(M), under 5 miles from Spofforth, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Spofforth is less a job than a run of under 15 miles towards Leeds, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Spofforth, and what happens next

Our van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Spofforth Village Hall, or outside Spofforth Church of England Controlled Primary School.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

On the call itself, you are told the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

The motor is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains in Spofforth and across North Yorkshire

Being a village, Spofforth has the same vans as nearby places — Plumpton Rocks, North Deighton — all the way through HG postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

A postcode starting HG3 1 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near All Saints, a lay-by on the way to Ginny Greenholes Playground and Conservation Area, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Spofforth Castle.

## For Spofforth drivers, the short version

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere in North Yorkshire.
