# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Spotland Bridge

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car is around Spotland Bridge.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels on the roads about Spotland Bridge and Passmonds carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Spotland Bridge

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Spotland Road before work, or in the car park outside The Ratcliffe Bars on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new vehicle.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Spotland Fold or the middle of Spotland Bridge, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Mitchell Hey or a forecourt around Spotland Bridge.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors show which goes in which inlet right there.

- The handbook says which it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Rochdale, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere around Greater Manchester, follow this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Mellor Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Spotland Bridge?

Do not start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone starts your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Asda or the Texaco, ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the pump.

Your own driveway around Spotland Bridge is the place it stays.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over safely and turn the vehicle off.

On the A627(M), under 3 miles from Spotland Bridge, that means the next exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Spotland Bridge is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Manchester — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Spotland Bridge, and what happens next

Our van reaches the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near St Clement's, or outside Spotland Primary Academy.

Those answers determine this work and our price, so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of the car.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
