# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Spring End: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Spring End.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains how it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Low Common, as well as Spring End, run on two liquids; the engine takes just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each filling station visit, week in, week out.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what filler to use.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Spring End: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Hall Cliffe Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Fleece.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new vehicle.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour begins, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Spring End or out in Ossett Spa.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Spring End forecourt or a drive out in Lupset, spend a few seconds on these before any goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Wakefield Westgate.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere around West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Spa Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Spring End: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Asda Express, Shell or another — the staff will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

On your own drive in Spring End? So your car remains put.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Spring End lies under a mile from the M1; there, take the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wakefield, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Spring End.

## Spring End: what takes place when our engineers arrive

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Wakefield Snapethorpe Primary School, near Ossett Spa or on your own driveway.

Those replies settle the work and the price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it is left.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Spring End itself

Spring End is a suburban area located near Wakefield in West Yorkshire, sitting at an elevation of 48 metres in a generally low-lying inland setting. Spring End is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential development patterns of the region. Spring End is close to several nearby places, including Ossett Spa, Hall Cliffe, and Horbury, and is situated about 2.4 miles from Wakefield city centre.

## AdBlue drains around Spring End, and West Yorkshire beyond

Over WF postcodes, our teams that cover Spring End — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, Horbury and Hall Cliffe included.

Give a postcode that starts WF4 6, and the van gets there fastest.

No need to shift your car.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Carr Lodge Park, a side street near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits.

Guessing won't help behind Church of St Peter and St Leonard, close to a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and check.

## For Spring End people, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
