# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Spring Side

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits around Spring Side, is normally all it needs if found before the engine runs.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers why it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your engine — yet plenty of current diesels seen around Spring Side and Constable Lee carry a second fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Spring Side: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Greenbank Park before work, or in the car park at Northern Whisper Tap Room on the way home.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it happens in Rawtenstall or the middle of Spring Side, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Cloughfold or a forecourt in Spring Side, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Accrington, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Lancashire that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush by Newchurch Road on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five stays out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Spring Side?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Tesco, the Shell or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Spring Side.

Where your motor has been run by now, pull over safely and switch the car off.

The next exit means where to leave if you're on the M66, under 3 miles from Spring Side.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Spring Side is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Salford — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Spring Side: what takes place when we get there

Our van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Rawtenstall Cricket Club, or outside Rawtenstall St Paul's Church of England Primary School.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it sits.

After the filter is flushed — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## About Spring Side, for a moment

Spring Side is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing. Spring Side has a population of around 3106 people and is located near other local places such as Rawtenstall, Higher Cloughfold, and Lower Cloughfold. Spring Side sits at an elevation of 201 metres, approximately 15.4 miles from Salford and 176.5 miles from London.

## Spring Side and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, Spring Side shares its vans surrounding areas — Higher Cloughfold, Lower Cloughfold — all the way through BB postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting BB4 7.

Moving the car is not needed.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Kay Street Baptist Church, a lay-by on the way to Fall barn park, a drive.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Rawtenstall Market, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## For Spring Side drivers, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere across Lancashire.
