# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Spring Village

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is in Spring Village.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single fluid but two: that's what many newer diesels near Spring Village and Lawley Common run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on every filling station call-out, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Spring Village?

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Bridge Road before work, or in the car park outside Travellers Joy on the way home.

New-to-you cars are second, as well. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Doseley or the middle of Spring Village, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Coalmoor or a forecourt around Spring Village.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many cars mark which goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Telford Central's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Shropshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pool Hill Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Step five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Spring Village?

Brief order, then. First: the motor stays off.

Keep your ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone starts the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Asda, the Sainsbury's or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Spring Village.

When your engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn it off.

On the M54, under 3 miles from Spring Village, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Spring Village is less a job than a run of under 25 miles towards Wolverhampton, so say.

## Spring Village: what occurs when our engineers get there

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Dawley Church of England Primary Academy, beside Horsehay Methodist Church or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
