# Springburn: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, if your engine hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly purged where your car sits around Springburn.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels around Sighthill, as well as Springburn, carry on two liquids; the engine gets only the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

There is a filler on each tank.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Springburn: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Wellfield Street, or at Shevlanes on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar motors are second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Springburn or out in Old Balornock.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Parkhouse or a forecourt around Springburn.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles mark which goes in which filler just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever across Glasgow City the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Reidhouse Street, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Stop once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Springburn: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the Costco or anywhere else.

On your own drive around Springburn? So your car remains put.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M8, under 3 miles from Springburn, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Glasgow, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Springburn.

## When we get there around Springburn, what occurs?

By the local primary school, near Springburn Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, since those replies decide the work and our quote.

Nobody sets off until you have heard the quote by phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it clears out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Once your filter has been flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested.

Then our technicians start the car and check it runs properly before we go.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
