# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Springfield: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Springfield.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows covers how it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads round Springfield and Moulsham carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

There's a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Springfield: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Rushleydale before work, or in the car park at The Gardeners on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar car.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the pour begins, no part halts it.

Chelmer Village or the middle of Springfield: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Blasford Hill or a forecourt around Springfield.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Beaulieu Park's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere across Essex the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pump Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Both under a single flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Springfield?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Sainsbury's, BP or another forecourt will usually help pushing your car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Springfield.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M25, under 15 miles from Springfield, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Springfield is a smaller job than a run towards Chelmsford, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Springfield, what happens?

Outside The Bishops' Church of England and Roman Catholic Primary School, close to Springfield Parish Centre or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Which liquid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the answers set both work and quote.

Nobody sets off before you have heard the price by phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

The motor is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before we go.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run need about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

## About Springfield itself

## Springfield and Essex: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, Springfield has the same vans as nearby areas — Chelmsford, Broomfield — right across CM postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Our van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting CM1 6.

The car stays where it is.

Draining happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by Springfield Library, or a layby on the way to Hogarth Court.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of North Springfield Baptist Church? By a county line? Checking is better than assuming, so phone.

## For Springfield drivers, the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere across Essex, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103.
