# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in St Briavels: Why It Happens

Pause here for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't run, it is emptied and fully purged where your car is around St Briavels.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near St Briavels and The Fence run, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two together behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It's in the gap that the error happens.

## St Briavels: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Church Street, perhaps at The George on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of St Briavels or out in Lower Meend.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, at a forecourt around St Briavels or a drive over in Wyegate Green. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- On plenty of vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — from Lydney's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere across Gloucestershire, use this routine.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of East Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## St Briavels: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. First: the engine remains off.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — BP, Texaco or any other — the staff will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

At home around St Briavels? Then your car remains put.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next exit is the place to leave when you are on the M48, under 10 miles from St Briavels.

A short hop across St Briavels is a smaller job than a run towards Newport, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## St Briavels: what takes place when our engineers get there

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it outside St Briavels Parochial Church of England Primary School, beside St Briavels Castle or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Those answers determine the work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then the tank is drained and the system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Next we start the car and check it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains in St Briavels and across Gloucestershire

As a rural village, St Briavels has the same vans as nearby areas — Coldharbour, Mork — all the way through GL postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Quote a postcode beginning GL15 6, and the van arrives quickest.

Moving the car isn't necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Saint Mary, a lay-by on the way to Lower Meend, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Bigsweir House.

## In short, for St Briavels people

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Gloucestershire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave it off then call 0333 366 0103.
