# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in St Georges Hill: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around St Georges Hill, finding it before the motor turns normally means draining and a full flush where it stands.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers how it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many current diesels on the roads around St Georges Hill and Weybridge carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## St Georges Hill: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off West Road before work, or in the car park at Hand and Spear Hotel on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: an unfamiliar car.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Brooklands or right in the heart of St Georges Hill.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a St Georges Hill forecourt or a drive out in Burwood Park, spend a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show what belongs in each filler just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Weybridge's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are in Surrey — a simple routine to follow.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Spenser Avenue.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## St Georges Hill: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the motor: that is where the short order of things starts.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the Tesco or anywhere else.

On your own drive in St Georges Hill? So the car stays put.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over safely and turn it off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you are on the M25, under 3 miles from St Georges Hill.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across St Georges Hill is smaller a job than a trip of under 25 miles towards Westminster, and so tell us.

## When our engineers get there in St Georges Hill, what happens?

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Campbell gate, or by Manby Lodge Infant School.

What liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers set the work and quote.

That quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away by itself. Hence it counts more.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

Then our engineers start it and check it runs properly before leaving.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains in St Georges Hill and across Surrey

St Georges Hill is a small village, and our vans that cover it also work the places near it, Wey Meadows and Whiteley Village among them, across the KT postcode area.

Quickest of all: quote a KT13 0 postcode for our van.

The vehicle remains where it is.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Brooklands' Darkest Hour, a lay-by on the way to The Heath, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Scoreboard.

## St Georges Hill people: the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Surrey, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
