# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in St Georges Square: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around St Georges Square.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds your engine — yet plenty of current diesels seen about St Georges Square and Bybrook hold another liquid as well.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the fumes.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in St Georges Square: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off St. George's Square, or heading home in the car park outside The George Hotel.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it out in Ashford or right in the heart of St Georges Square.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Brookfield or a forecourt around St Georges Square.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Ashford International.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere in Kent the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of New Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## St Georges Square: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at eg, BP or any forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle clear if you ask.

Your own drive around St Georges Square is the place it should stay.

Already started? Stop when it's safe, then switch off.

Come off the M20 — under a mile out of St Georges Square — at the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across St Georges Square is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Canterbury — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around St Georges Square, and what takes place next

Our van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near The Tank, or outside Ashford, St Mary's Church of England Primary School.

What liquid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the answers decide both work and price.

Nobody sets off before you've had the price by phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a check of your vehicle.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
