# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in St Helens: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle sits around St Helens.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels in Halton, like those in St Helens, carry on two fluids; the motor gets only your diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in St Helens?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Elphinstone Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, carries on.

Whether it happens in St Helens Wood or the middle of St Helens, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Blacklands or a forecourt around St Helens.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Ore, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across East Sussex, follow this routine.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Beauclerk Way.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Both under one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Step five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around St Helens?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Valero, Esso or any forecourt will usually help pushing the car away when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in St Helens.

When your engine has been run already, stop somewhere safe and switch the vehicle off.

St Helens lies under 25 miles from the M20; on it, use the next exit.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across St Helens is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles to Brighton and Hove — so say about how far it went.

## When we arrive in St Helens, what takes place?

By Sandown Primary School and Nursery, near Hastings Crematorium or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies decide the work and our price.

The price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it is running correctly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains across East Sussex, St Helens included

Throughout TN postcodes, the teams that cover St Helens — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, Ore and Broomgrove included.

Give a postcode beginning TN34 2, and the van arrives fastest.

There's no need to move the vehicle.

Anywhere it sits — near Old St Helen's Church, in a layby en route to Sandhurst Recreation Ground, at home — that is where it gets drained.

Guessing won't help at the back of St Helens Church, close to a border, or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and check.
