# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in St James

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around St James, catching it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near St James and High Brooms run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two together under one flap.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which filler to use.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## St James: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off St James' Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Allotment.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of St James or out in Sherwood.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Sandown Park or a forecourt in St James, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show which goes in each inlet right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at High Brooms's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere in Kent the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Albion Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around St James already?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the BP or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in St James.

Where your engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn the car off.

St James lies under 15 miles from the M26; on it, use the next exit.

Mileage matters — a short hop across St James makes a smaller job than driving under 50 miles towards Brighton and Hove — so say roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers turn up around St James

Outside St Barnabas CofE VA Primary School, near St Barnabas or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

We ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run, since the replies decide the work and the quote.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains across Kent, St James included

St James is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the places around it, St Johns and Royal Tunbridge Wells among them, across the TN postcode area.

A postcode starting TN1 2 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Grosvenor Recreation Ground, a side street close to St James' Church: our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Luke's Church.

## In short, for St James people

Tip no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere across Kent.
