# St Peter the Great: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is in St Peter the Great.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — yet many modern diesels seen around St Peter the Great and Diglis hold another liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on every filling station visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## St Peter the Great: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Bittern Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It's a few seconds, be it out in St Peter The Great or bang in the centre of St Peter the Great.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Lower Wick or a forecourt in St Peter the Great, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Worcester Shrub Hill, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere around Worcestershire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Swallow Close, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## St Peter the Great: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short list, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around St Peter the Great, leave it where it stands.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then switch off.

On the M5, under 3 miles from St Peter the Great, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across St Peter the Great is smaller work than a trip of under 3 miles to Worcester, so tell us.

## Our arrival around St Peter the Great, and what occurs next

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near St Peter's Parish Hall, or outside Cherry Orchard Primary School.

Those answers settle the work and our price, so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run.

That quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
