# Stamshaw: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down for now, leave your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Stamshaw, finding it before your engine turns normally means draining and a full flush on the spot.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers how it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels near Stamshaw and Vicarage Row run, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which filler to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Stamshaw

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Strode Road, or heading home in the car park at Mother Shipton.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Tipner or right in the centre of Stamshaw.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Stamshaw or a drive out in St Francis Court. A few seconds, that's all.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from Hilsea's car park, say — rather than when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Hampshire that is.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside Jervis Road on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Stamshaw already?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Shell, Esso or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car clear when asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Stamshaw.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

Stamshaw lies under a mile from the M275; there, use the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Portsmouth, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Stamshaw.

## Our arrival around Stamshaw, and what occurs next

Our van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near St Saviour's Church, or by Stamshaw Junior School.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because those replies settle this work and the quote.

The quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## About Stamshaw and where it is

Stamshaw is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and close to the shores of the English Channel. Stamshaw has a relatively low elevation of around 5 metres above sea level and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock. Stamshaw is located near several other suburban areas, including Tipner, North End, and the nearby island of Whale Island.

## Stamshaw and Hampshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over PO postcodes, our vans covering Stamshaw — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, North End and Whale Island among them.

Give a postcode that starts PO2 8, and the van arrives fastest.

Moving the car isn't needed.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Corpus Christi RC Church, a lay-by on the way to Alexandra Park, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Church of St. Barbara.

## In short, for Stamshaw people

Tip nothing till you have read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank after all? Keep the car off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, across Hampshire.
