# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stanah

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is around Stanah.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Stanah and Thornton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for each tank.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Stanah: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Estuary Gardens, or on the way home in the car park outside The Bay Horse.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Raikes or right in the centre of Stanah.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Little Thornton or a forecourt around Stanah.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- On many motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside the diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Poulton-Le-Fylde's car park, say — rather than when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Lancashire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Meadow Close, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stanah?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the Texaco or somewhere else.

Your own drive around Stanah is where it stays.

Already run? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off.

The next junction is where to come off if you're on the M55, under 10 miles from Stanah.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Stanah makes a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Lancaster — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around Stanah, what happens?

Wherever your car has stopped, be it outside Stanah Primary School, near St John or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Which fluid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide both work and quote.

During the call itself, you are told our price — ahead of dispatch.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our technicians are there.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## About Stanah itself

Stanah is a small suburban area located on the coast of Lancashire, with an elevation of approximately 6 metres above sea level. Stanah sits near the cities of Lancaster and Blackpool, and is close to the nearby places of Raikes, Staynall, and Trunnah. Stanah has a population of around 1063 people, and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

## AdBlue drains across Lancashire, Stanah included

Being a residential suburb, Stanah has the same vans as nearby areas — Staynall, Trunnah — right through FY postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Quote a postcode beginning FY5 5, and the van gets there fastest.

The vehicle stays put.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Wyre Estuary Country Park, a side street close to Sacred Heart: our engineers drain the vehicle where it stands.

Assuming doesn't help behind Thornton Methodist Church Hall, on a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

## Stanah people: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
