# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stanground South: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, leave your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Stanground South.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Stanground South and Kings Dyke run, with diesel for your engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side under one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

It's in that gap that the slip happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Stanground South

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Bellona Drive, or on the way home in the car park outside Apple Cart.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Stanground South or out in Stanground.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Hampton Hargate or a forecourt around Stanground South, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Peterborough? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is in Cambridgeshire — a simple routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Apollo Avenue.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently using the built-in spout.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Stanground South?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Applegreen or anywhere else.

If you are on your own driveway in Stanground South, leave the car where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction is the place to come off when you are on the A1(M), under 5 miles from Stanground South.

## Stanground South: what occurs when our technicians arrive

Outside Saint Michael CofE Primary School, close to Cardea Community Sports Pavillion or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Those answers settle the work and the quote, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

That quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is emptied and the system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
