# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Stanhope? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition too.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The trouble starts once it's pulled through your lines — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Stanhope, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has been run.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stanhope

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting TN23 3, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Never do these:

- Moving the car just a short way is no reason to start your engine.

- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it is wasted.

- Even a short way up Hadrian Gardens is too far to drive it.

- Draining your tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

The attendants on duty at any Stanhope filling station — the Tesco among them — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in South Ashford last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow passages; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning around Stanhope makes things worse. In the tank only, waiting costs nothing.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second kind of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a fault of thin fuel.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside the tank, it causes nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether the car sits in Singleton or the heart of Stanhope, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around Kent the car has stopped.

## Stanhope: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle bought when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical story.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Rushing, outside Beaver Green Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

Close to Britannia Lane, someone pours a bottle in on that drive in the evening.

Another version: darkness, the car park by Queens Head, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a family with one of each fuels.

Wherever you are in Stanhope or the rest of Kent, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stanhope, and your engine started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Limes Park or halfway across Stanhope.

Once you safely can, stop then turn everything off — without turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M20, under 3 miles from Stanhope, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Stanhope to the car park by Courtside Sports Facility is a very different job from a run towards Canterbury, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been started.

If it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Stanhope

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a street beside Parish Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Stanhope, and our van comes to it.

The work rests on three answers, which we get before all else — which fluid went in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one after the tank is drained, on the spot.

A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear out by itself.

Next, the filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the car.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if the motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Finally, your system is primed with fresh diesel.

Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Ashford International or on a drive in Stanhope.

The check before we go is that it runs properly on new diesel.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

Phone and check instead of guessing if you are close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain.

No moving is needed. In Stanhope, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: your vehicle is emptied on the spot, whether in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stanhope: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind The Stanhope Centre.

With that reason, each call from Stanhope opens by asking the identical trio — what went in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Once they are answered, a range turns into one firm figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## In Stanhope and still alongside your car?

In that case, do nothing — that's the most helpful move there is.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.
