# Stanion: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition too.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes once the pump starts drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Stanion, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the engine has been run.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Stanion, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring just where you are. Say a NN14 1 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not weaken it.

- Even a short way up Cardigan Road is too far to drive it.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you move the vehicle off the island if you are at a forecourt around Stanion, whether it's the Jet or elsewhere.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was intended to go that way.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same place the intake draws from.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits underneath the diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Brigstock yesterday and not started stays the straightforward case, as long as nobody touches the key.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there.

A car left standing in Stanion with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the main problem.

Mixed through your diesel and left still, it's harmless at that stage; running your motor does the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

Whether the car is in Corby or the centre of Stanion, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Northamptonshire the car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Stanion

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

A bottle picked up while heading home and tipped in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Stanion Church of England (Aided) Primary School the top-up is hurried.

Someone tips the container in outside their house, right off Chapel Lane, as the day ends.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside Lord Nelson Public House.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels.

Anywhere across Northamptonshire, Stanion as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

## Stanion: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may show up, maybe midway across Stanion or coming back from Stanion pocket park.

When you safely can, pull over and turn it off — with no turning it on again to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the Great North Road, under 15 miles from Stanion, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, so heading for Peterborough, under 25 miles away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Stanion to the car park by St Peter & St Andrew.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Caught soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Stanion

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a road beside St Peters Hall, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Stanion, and our van comes to it.

Which fluid got in, about the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: we check first, since those shape the work.

Next, draining your tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Not run? In that case expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the system with new diesel comes last.

At that point our technicians start it and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Corby or a driveway around Stanion.

Before leaving, our engineers confirm it is running smoothly with clean diesel in.

As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

Stanion lies near the villages of Little Oakley and Corby Old Village, and is approximately 18.7 miles from Peterborough. ## Stanion and Northamptonshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the NN postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue jobs in Stanion serve most of Northamptonshire too, Little Oakley, Corby Old Village and Weldon among them.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

No moving is needed. In Stanion, a village, a mobile service works: the car is emptied where it stands, be it in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Stanion?

Because the callouts differ, a flat figure would not be fair.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Stanion Village Hall.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Stanion opens with the identical trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Given them, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

Before a van sets off, you hear our price by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## In Stanion and still beside your car?

Not touching your car is, right now, the best thing you can do.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Stanion or anywhere across Northamptonshire.
