# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stanley Common

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where the vehicle sits in Stanley Common, is usually all it needs when caught before the motor runs.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Stanley Common and West Hallam carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Stanley Common: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Barker Close, or on the way home in the car park outside Bateman Arms.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Stanley Common or out in Smalley Common.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Stanley Common forecourt or a drive out in Stanley, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show what belongs in which filler just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Langley Mill, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — wherever you are in Derbyshire — a simple routine to use.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Belper Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then look again — making sure the diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Stanley Common?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the Texaco, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Stanley Common.

Already started? Stop when it's sensible, then turn off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you're on the M1, under 5 miles from Stanley Common.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Derby, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Stanley Common.

## When our engineers get there in Stanley Common, what happens?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Stanley Common Church of England Primary School, close to United Church of All Saints or on your own drive.

What fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide both work and price.

No one heads out until you've heard the price by phone.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and finally your vehicle is tested.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after we get there, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Fastest of all: quote a DE7 6 postcode to our van.

Shifting your car isn't necessary.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Eventide Village Hall, a lay-by on the way to Stanley Common Recreation Ground, a drive.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of West Hallam Community Centre? Close to a border? Checking beats assuming, so ring.

Before you tip, read the cap.
