# Stanley Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

In Stanley Green, catching it before the engine turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels in Creekmoor, as well as Stanley Green, carry on two liquids; the motor takes only the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two together under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Stanley Green: how it happens

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a driveway off Christopher Crescent before work, or in the car park outside New Inn on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

Oakdale or the middle of Stanley Green: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Stanley Green forecourt or a driveway out in Longfleet, take a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Poole? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in Dorset the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Willis Way, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check again — confirm your diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Stanley Green?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the Tesco Fleetsbridge or somewhere else.

## Stanley Green: what occurs when our technicians get there

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Oakdale Library, or outside Stanley Green Infant Academy.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the car.

We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
