# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stanley

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the motor.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts till your engine sucks it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Stanley, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stanley: the first few minutes

To do:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it away.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting L13 7, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Do not:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: your motor remains off.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance up Bolan Street.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

The staff working at any Stanley forecourt — the Esso among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

No part in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Oak Hill Park overnight and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out.

A vehicle left standing in Stanley with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Texaco.

Mixed through the diesel and sitting still, it's harmless at that stage; using the engine is the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the following tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Stanley or out in Tuebrook, does more harm than almost any other slip.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to clear, anywhere your car has come to rest around Merseyside.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Stanley: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

A bottle picked up when driving home and tipped in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Anne's (Stanley) Junior Mixed and Infant School the top-up is rushed.

After work, a container goes in on a driveway near Felton Grove.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Old Swan, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same mistake, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Stanley or the rest of Merseyside.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stanley?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through the filter and lines.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Doric Park or halfway across Stanley.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

On the M62, under 3 miles from Stanley, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That's why crossing Stanley to park near St Anne and a drive of under 3 miles for Liverpool are such different jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been started.

When it's caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

## Stanley: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest in Stanley — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside St Paul's Stoneycroft — our van comes to your vehicle.

Which fluid went in, about the quantity, and whether the engine has turned over: our engineers ask first, since those decide the job.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is emptied, right there.

A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not clear away by itself.

Clean diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, provided the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with clean diesel comes last.

Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, outside Wavertree Technology Park or on a driveway around Stanley.

It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before we head off.

Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Stanley itself

Stanley is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated near the coast and approximately 2.5 miles from Liverpool. Stanley sits at an elevation of 47 metres, with its terraced housing stock reflecting the typical architectural style of the North West region. Stanley is close to other nearby places, including Tillerman Court, Stoneycroft, and Old Swan, and is home to around 10,810 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Merseyside, Stanley included

AdBlue call-outs around Stanley are passed to vans that serve the towns near it — Tillerman Court, Stoneycroft plus Old Swan — and most of Merseyside beyond, across L postcodes.

Guessing won't help close to a border or somewhere hard to describe; ring and check.

Stanley is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Stanley?

Because each jobs differ, a flat price would not be honest.

What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Lambanana.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, every call from Stanley opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, and whether the engine ran.

Given those replies, the range narrows to a single firm figure.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Still alongside the car around Stanley?

Not touching your car is, then, the most useful move open to you.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Stanley or anywhere in Merseyside.
