# Stanley Place: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave the motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where the car sits around Stanley Place, is usually all it takes when caught before the engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to the engine — yet many modern diesels driven round Stanley Place and Winterfield Mains carry a second liquid as well.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in at each filling station call-out, again and again.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Stanley Place?

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off North Road, perhaps outside Castle Hotel on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Marine Court or the middle of Stanley Place, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in West Barns or a forecourt in Stanley Place.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Dunbar? Ask whoever drove the car last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across East Lothian, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Bayswell Park.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — confirm the diesel cap remained shut throughout. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Step five is out.

## Stanley Place: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels it alone starts your pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at JET, Asda or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car away if asked.

If you're on your own drive in Stanley Place, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Come off the M8 — under 50 miles out of Stanley Place — at the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Stanley Place is smaller work than a run of under 50 miles towards Edinburgh, so tell us.

## Stanley Place: what occurs when we get there

Outside the local primary school, near Mushroom Sculptures or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run, because those replies settle this work and the quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Then your tank is cleared and your system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then your vehicle is tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
