# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stanley

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your motor off and keep your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your lines — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully rinsed where the car stands in Stanley.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stanley: the first few minutes

To do:

- Remove your keys, which stops anyone switching the electrics on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not throw it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting WF3 4, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Ash Crescent.

- Draining that tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

Moving the car off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Stanley forecourt you're on, the Shell included.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas.

No part inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of it was meant to travel that way.

It does not blend. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Lofthouse Gate last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out.

Lines holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car sitting in Stanley. Just inside the tank, it stays the same.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on Total Energies's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the main issue.

No damage comes while it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the next fill will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Stanley or out in Lee Moor, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in West Yorkshire your car is standing.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Stanley?

It's not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

Usually it is not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Rushing, outside Stanley St Peters Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

Near Lime Pit Lane, someone tips a bottle in at home after work.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Travellers Rest, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, new vehicles, fleet motors, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most.

Wherever you're in Stanley or the remainder of West Yorkshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stanley?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Maybe returning from Stanley Marsh Nature Reserve, or part way across Stanley, the engine might run rough, smoke, lose power, flash the dash or stall.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of testing it again.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Stanley lies under 3 miles from the M62; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why crossing Stanley to park beside Stanley Community Centre and a drive of under 3 miles towards Wakefield are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has ended up.

If it's spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Stanley

Anywhere it has come to rest in Stanley — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road beside Stanley Library — our van travels to your car.

Three answers decide the work, and so first our technicians ask what got in, roughly the amount, plus whether your motor has turned over.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Testing the car follows last, once fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, replaced.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The last step is to bleed the system on new diesel.

You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Stanley or in a bay by Outwood.

It's tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers head off.

We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## About Stanley itself

Stanley is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside near Wakefield. Stanley sits at an elevation of 26 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Stanley is located close to nearby places such as Stanley Ferry, Bottom Boat, and Outwood, and is approximately 162.4 miles from London. Stanley has a population of around 3033 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Stanley and West Yorkshire

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls in Stanley also cover the spots round it, Stanley Ferry, Bottom Boat and Outwood among them, and most of West Yorkshire beyond, across the WF postcode area.

Phone and check instead of guessing if you're close to a county line, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

Stanley is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Stanley: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat price could be fair, since every job is different.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St Peters Church Centre.

That's why every call from Stanley starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your policy whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## In Stanley and still beside the vehicle?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the most useful move open to you.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran is all our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest across West Yorkshire, Stanley included.
