# Stanmore: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Stanmore, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Stanmore, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

- Pull the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WV15 5, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep it off.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Brook Lane.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move the car away from the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Stanmore, whether it is the Shell or somewhere else.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is why a car topped up in Quatford yesterday and not switched on remains the simple case, provided nobody touches your key.

Once it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Stanmore leaves it worse. Inside that tank only, waiting costs nothing.

And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Blended into the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; running your motor is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Stanmore or out in Roughton, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Anywhere around Shropshire your car has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Stanmore?

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

Usually it's not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St. Mary's Bluecoat Church of England Primary School the refill is hurried.

Near Russell Close, someone tips a container in at home after work.

One more pattern: darkness, the car park by the pub in the village, and someone using that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the spare motor in a family with one of each fuels.

Leave it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, anywhere in Stanmore or the rest of Shropshire you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stanmore, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

It's been sucked through your filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps returning from Stanmore Country Park, or part way across Stanmore, the engine might go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or stall.

No restarting to test: stop when it is safe, then switch everything off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M54, under 10 miles from Stanmore, by the next junction and park safely, not driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Stanmore to the car park by Quatford Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Permanent damage is very uncommon if it's noticed quickly.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Stanmore

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Stanmore: a side street close to High Rock, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work rests on three replies, which we ask for first — what was put in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

Then our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space at Cosford or a drive around Stanmore.

The check before our engineers go is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## Stanmore: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job differs, and so not one single price would be honest.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Bridgnorth Community Centre.

Ahead of any figure, not afterwards, each call from Stanmore begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and whether the engine ran.

Their replies shrink the range right down to a single figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

As the van is on the way, dig out your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Next to the car around Stanmore, still?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Stanmore or anywhere across Shropshire.
