# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Staplehurst

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Staplehurst, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has been run.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Staplehurst: the first few minutes

To do:

- Take your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Put your hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting TN12 0, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move the car.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself sets your pump running on many diesels. Skip it.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Even a short distance along High Street is too far to drive the car.

- By the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.

The attendants working at any Staplehurst filling station — the Esso among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

On the drive, your car stays just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the gases.

A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It does not combine. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A car filled on a drive in Marden Thorn overnight and not started since is the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when your motor turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it remains there.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car sitting around Staplehurst. Only in your tank, it stays the same.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a separate kind of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Harvest Energy, and this issue is diluted fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, so watering it can't work. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Hawkenbury or the centre of Staplehurst alike.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Kent the vehicle is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Staplehurst

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle bought when driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Staplehurst School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Royal Oak Mews.

Else, after dark by The Kings Head, the car is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known cars see it the most — rentals, new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor in a family with both fuels.

An identical slip, same first response — keep it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Staplehurst or the rest of Kent.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Staplehurst?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Wimpey Field Nature Reserve or halfway across Staplehurst.

When you safely can, pull over and switch it off — without restarting to test.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M20, under 10 miles from Staplehurst, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across Staplehurst to park near Staplehurst Library and a drive of under 25 miles towards Canterbury are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted soon.

## Staplehurst: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Staplehurst: a side street near Staplehurst Village Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers shape the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid got in, roughly the amount, and whether the motor has run.

Then the tank is drained where the car stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains won't flush away unaided.

Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

You set off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Staplehurst or in a bay outside the nearest station.

The test before our technicians head off is that it runs properly on clean diesel.

As the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Staplehurst itself

Staplehurst is a village in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of 33 metres, and is located approximately 37.9 miles from London. Staplehurst has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and the village is surrounded by nearby places such as The Quarter, Knowles Hill, and Knox Bridge. Staplehurst is close to the city of Canterbury, which is 24.2 miles away, and has a population of around 2534 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Staplehurst and Kent

AdBlue call-outs in Staplehurst go to vans that serve the places near it — The Quarter, Knowles Hill plus Knox Bridge — and much of Kent beyond, throughout TN postcodes.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.

Staplehurst is a rural village, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Staplehurst?

No flat figure could be honest, because every job is different.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open driveway is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind All Saints.

Before a figure, not afterwards, each call from Staplehurst opens with three questions: the fuel, the amount, plus whether the engine ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, dig out your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Alongside the vehicle around Staplehurst, right now?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the best move you can do.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Staplehurst or wherever in Kent, after you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether the engine ran.
