# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stapleton: How It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is in Stapleton.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Lockleaze, like those in Stapleton, run on two liquids; your engine gets just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together under one flap.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station visit, week in, week out.

Much less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Stapleton?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Colston Hill before work, or in the car park outside Masons Arms on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, be it in Eastville or bang in the heart of Stapleton.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Stapleton forecourt or a drive over in Broomhill, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Ashley Down? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Bristol that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Bell Hill.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Step five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stapleton?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Keep your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Valero or somewhere else.

Your own drive around Stapleton is where it stays.

Where your engine has run by now, stop safely then turn it off.

On the M32, under a mile from Stapleton, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Stapleton is a smaller job than a run towards Bristol, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Stapleton, and what occurs next

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Glenfrome Primary School, near Holy Trinity Church or on your own driveway.

Which fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those replies set the work and quote.

Nobody heads out until you have heard our price over the phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

Assuming won't help at the back of Tomb of the Horatii, on a border, or anywhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.
