# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stathern: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where your vehicle sits in Stathern, is usually all it takes if found before your engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels around Eaton, like those in Stathern, carry on two liquids; your engine gets only the diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

It's in that gap that the slip lives.

## Stathern: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Narrow Lane before work, or in the car park at The Plough on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Harby or the middle of Stathern, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Barkestone-le-Vale or a forecourt in Stathern, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Elton & Orston.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Leicestershire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Red Lion Street, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using the built-in spout.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stathern already?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear when you ask.

Your own drive in Stathern is the place it should stay.

Already started? Stop once it's safe, then turn off.

On the M1, under 25 miles from Stathern, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Nottingham, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Stathern.

## Stathern: what occurs when our technicians get there

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near War Memorial Institute, or outside Stathern Primary School.

The answers determine this work and our price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a check of your vehicle.

After that our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## Stathern and Leicestershire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a rural village, Stathern shares its vans surrounding areas — Eastwell, Plungar — right across LE postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Quote a postcode that starts LE14 4, and our van gets there quickest.

The car remains where it is.

Anywhere it sits — beside St. Guthlac's Church, on a lay-by en route to Combs Plantation, on a drive — that's where it gets emptied.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Eastwell Village Hall, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## For Stathern people, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it sits, anywhere in Leicestershire.
