# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Staveley

Leave your motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, if the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is in Staveley.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single fluid but two: that is how many modern diesels near Staveley and Middlecroft run, with diesel feeding the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both together under one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Staveley: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Barlow Road, perhaps at Harleys on the way home that evening.

New-to-you vehicles come next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's seconds, be it in Lowgates or right in the heart of Staveley.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Barrow Hill or a forecourt around Staveley.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it next to your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Chesterfield? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Derbyshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of High Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Staveley already?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Morrisons, Shell or any other — the staff will usually help roll your car away, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Staveley, leave it where it stands.

When your engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe and switch it off.

Staveley lies under 3 miles from the M1; there, use the first exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Staveley is less a job than a run of under 10 miles towards Sheffield, and so say.

## Staveley: what occurs when our technicians arrive

Outside Speedwell Infant School, close to St John the Baptist or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because the answers set both work and price.

Nobody heads out before you've heard the quote over the phone.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

Filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians go.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
