# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Staverton

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Staverton.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many current diesels on the roads about Staverton and Holt carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Staverton: how it occurs

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Elm Close before work, or in the car park at The Old Bear Inn on the way home.

New-to-you cars come second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Staverton or out in Ham Green.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Woolley Green or a forecourt in Staverton.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- Can't see it beside your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Trowbridge? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever in Wiltshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside New Terrace on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Staverton already?

Short list, then. First: the engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Murco or any other — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

Your own drive around Staverton is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M4, under 15 miles from Staverton, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bath, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Staverton.

## When our engineers get there around Staverton, what occurs?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Staverton Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, near St Katharine or on your own drive.

Those answers decide the work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run.

On the call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that washes out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

After the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## Staverton and Wiltshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over BA postcodes, our teams that cover Staverton — a village — work the surrounding locations too, Hilperton Marsh and Forewoods Common among them.

Quote a postcode beginning BA14 6, and the van gets there fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to The Courts Garden, a lay-by on the way to Little Bradford Wood, a driveway.

Guessing doesn't help behind United Reformed Church, on a boundary, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.
