# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Staygate: Why It Happens

Keep the motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Staygate.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels around Truncliffe, as well as Staygate, carry on two fluids; your engine takes only your diesel.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Staygate?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Staygate Roundabout before work, or in the car park at West Bowling Social Club heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it.

Parkside or the middle of Staygate: it is the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Staygate forecourt or a drive out in East Bowling, spend a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Low Moor, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere across West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Chase Way, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Staygate?

Brief order, then. First: the engine stays unstarted.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Shell, Morrisons or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away when you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Staygate, leave it where it sits.

When the engine has been run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch the car off.

Come off the M606 — under a mile out of Staygate — at the next junction.

A short hop across Staygate is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Staygate, and what happens next

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Matthew's CofE Primary School and Nursery, close to Odsal Stadium or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — what liquid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so we ask.

No one heads out until you have heard the quote by phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then we fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we leave.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
