# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stenhouse

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is around Stenhouse.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many newer diesels in Saughtonhall, like those in Stenhouse, run on two fluids; the engine takes only the diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Stenhouse

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Stenhouse Terrace, or heading home in the car park outside The Laich.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Stenhouse or out in Saughton.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Stenhouse or a drive over in Carrick Knowe. Seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Slateford? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever it is across City of Edinburgh — a routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Stenhouse Drive on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- The two under one flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Stage five stays out.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Stenhouse?

Short order, then. First: the motor stays unstarted.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — BP, Sainsbury's or any other — the staff will normally help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Stenhouse.

When your motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off.

Stenhouse lies under 3 miles from the M8; there, use the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Stenhouse is smaller a job than a run of under 5 miles to Edinburgh, and so say.

## What happens when we get there around Stenhouse

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Hutchison Vale F.C. Community Sports Football Club or on your own drive.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since those replies decide the work and our quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away unaided. That is why it counts more.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

Then our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we go.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run take roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
