# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stibb Green: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Stibb Green.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel feeds your motor — but plenty of newer diesels seen round Stibb Green and Durley hold another fluid as well.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Stibb Green

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Savernake Road before work, or in the car park at The Three Horseshoes Inn on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar motors are next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on.

It's a few seconds, be it in Westcourt or right in the heart of Stibb Green.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Marr Green or a forecourt in Stibb Green.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Bedwyn, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Wiltshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of High Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Both under one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look once more — making sure the diesel filler remained closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stibb Green?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Esso, BP or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle away if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Stibb Green, leave it where it stands.

When your motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

Stibb Green sits under 10 miles from the M4; there, use the first exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Stibb Green is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Salisbury — so say roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we turn up around Stibb Green

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Burbage Primary School, near All Saints or on your own driveway.

What fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those replies set the work and price.

No one heads out until you have had our quote over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and then the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting SN8 3.

There's no need to shift your car.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Wolfhall, a lay-by on the way to Ladywell Copse, a drive.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Village Hall? By a border? Checking beats guessing, so ring.

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere around Wiltshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
