# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stivichall: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Stivichall.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — yet plenty of current diesels driven round Stivichall and Finham carry a second liquid as well.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two side by side behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stivichall: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Hurry follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Leamington Road, or heading home in the car park at Open Arms.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it happens in Cheylesmore or the middle of Stivichall, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Canley Gardens or a forecourt in Stivichall.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Coventry? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across West Midlands the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Montpellier Close on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel filler is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Stivichall: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — BP, Texaco or another — the staff will usually help roll the car clear, if you ask.

On your own drive around Stivichall? So the vehicle remains where it is.

Already run? Stop once it's safe, then switch off.

The next exit is where to come off if you are on the M6, under 5 miles from Stivichall.

Distance matters — a short hop across Stivichall makes a smaller job than heading under 3 miles to Coventry — so say about how far it went.

## Stivichall: what happens when our engineers get there

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether by Stivichall Primary School, beside St James Styvechale or at home, our van travels to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

Nobody heads out until you've heard our quote over the phone.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

The motor is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we head off.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we get there, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
