# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stobhillgate

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Stobhillgate.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Stobhillgate and Loansdean carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Stobhillgate

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Kingswell before work, or in the car park at The Waterford Lodge on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you vehicles come second, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

Stobhill or the middle of Stobhillgate: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Tranwell or a forecourt in Stobhillgate.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Morpeth? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning comes on — wherever you are in Northumberland — a routine to use.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush by Shields Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Stobhillgate?

Short list, then. First: the motor remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Morrisons or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

On your own drive around Stobhillgate? So your car remains where it is.

When the motor has been run by now, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

On the A167(M), under 15 miles from Stobhillgate, that means the next junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Stobhillgate makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Newcastle upon Tyne — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up in Stobhillgate, what takes place?

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it outside Morpeth Stobhillgate First School, beside The Cenotaph or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, since the answers decide the work and the quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then that tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of that clears out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then the car is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Anywhere it stands — near Morpeth Castle, on a lay-by en route to Mafeking Park, on a drive — that's where it is emptied.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Emily Wilding Davison statue? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.
