# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stockport: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Leave the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where the car stands in Stockport, is normally what it needs if caught before the motor runs.

Here before the event? Then the rest explains why it comes about and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Stockport and Portwood run, with diesel feeding the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## Stockport: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Wellington Street before work, or in the car park at The Wellington heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Stockport or out in Shaw Heath.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Cale Green or a forecourt around Stockport, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Greater Manchester the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Lord Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Stockport: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Keep the ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone starts the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Shell, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Stockport.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M60, under a mile from Stockport, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Stockport is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles to Manchester, so say.

## What occurs when we arrive around Stockport

The van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near Stockport Central Library, or outside St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, a Voluntary Academy.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — which fluid, what quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

Nobody sets off before you've heard the quote over the phone.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Shifting your car is not necessary.

Wherever it sits — beside Richard Cobden, in a lay-by heading to Viaduct Park, on a drive — that is where it is emptied.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of St. Peter's Church? Close to a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.
