# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stoke? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The harm starts once it's sucked through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Stoke.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stoke: the first few minutes

To do:

- Pull the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring just where you are. Say a PL1 5 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Do not:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your motor stays off.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way along Molesworth Road.

- By the road, don't try draining it yourself.

The staff on duty at any Stoke filling station — the Esso among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its fuel from.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, and that is why a car topped up in Devonport yesterday and never switched on remains the straightforward case, provided nobody turns your key.

Once it's pulled in, the damage takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

By daybreak, a car parked in Stoke with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's only inside that tank, it doesn't.

And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the Asda.

Blended into the diesel and left still, it is no threat for now; running the motor is the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next tankful won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Stoke or out in Millbay, costs more than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits just inside your tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to clear, anywhere the car has stopped in Devon.

## Stoke: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. No one means it.

It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Stuart Road Primary Academy the top-up is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Fitzroy Road.

Or a driver new to that flap refills your car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Millbridge Inn.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a fleet motor, or the spare car of a family with both fuels — the vehicles people know the least.

Wherever around Devon, Stoke as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stoke?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It has been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Perhaps returning from Damerel Park, or midway across Stoke, your engine may run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or stall.

No starting it again to check: pull over when it is safe, then turn it off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Stoke lies under 50 miles from the M5; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why crossing Stoke to park beside St Andrew with St Luke's Church and a drive of under a mile for Plymouth are such different jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the motor has been started there is more of it.

If it is noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## Stoke: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Stoke: a side street near Three Towns Amalgamation Centenary Stone, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has been run, because those replies decide this work.

Then your tank is emptied where your car waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

After that, the filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of the vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers arrive, if the engine hasn't run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last.

Whether it's a parking bay by Devonport or a drive in Stoke, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs properly on new diesel.

Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Stoke and where it is

Stoke is a suburban area in Devon, situated on the coast near Plymouth, with Stoke being one of the city's closest suburbs at just 0.9 miles away. Stoke sits at a relatively low elevation of 24 metres, looking out over the sea. Stoke is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock, which reflects the area's historical development as a residential zone for nearby Plymouth.

## AdBlue drains around Stoke and across Devon

Pennycomequick, Milehouse and Stonehouse are among the towns around Stoke that the same vans reach, along with much of Devon further out, over the PL postcode area.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

A van that comes to you fits Stoke, a residential suburb: there's no need to take your vehicle to us, because our engineers empty it on the spot, on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Stoke: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Plymouth Proprietary Library.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Stoke opens with the identical trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — before any quote.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Stoke: still next to the car?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, across Stoke or wherever in Devon, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether the engine ran.
